Hundreds of downhill daredevils took to the hills of Calgary last week for the 11th World Downhill Skateboarding & Street Luge Championships.

More than 220 racers from all over the world took part in the high-speed, high-stakes races in the Olympic Park, home of the 1988 Winter Olympics.

The World Championship is the most important event in the racing calendar, and competition was fierce on the 1.5 kilometres downhill track.

First up were the Downhill Skateboarders, who stand upright on longboards and can reach speeds of up to 90 kilometers an hour in their white-knuckle races.

Three rare white Bengal tigers were on public display at the Liberec Zoo in the Czech Republic. The cubs, born in July to mother Surya Bara, only became viewable to the public recently. Liberec Zoo is the only zoo in the country to have successfully bred and birthed white tigers. They are rare in the wild because they stand out in the jungle, hindering their efforts to catch prey.

Today Hong Kong parents and protesters turned out in droves to show their opposition to Hong Kong's new moral and national education course. The protest is a continuation of demonstrations that happened over the weekend, which organizers say saw ninety-thousand people.

Their goal was to have the class removed from the curriculum before school started on Monday. They were not successful.

Many Hong Kong residents see the new course as a move from Hong Kong's Mainland-backed leadership to keep coming generations from criticizing the government.

Slow global orders are being felt in China's manufacturing sector. After preliminary surveys suggested a dip in manufacturing output, official numbers have confirmed it.

On Saturday, the National Bureau of Statistics released the Purchasing Manager's Index for August. It dropped to 47.6 points, down from 49.3 in July. The figure is at its lowest since March, 2009. A figure below 50 means manufacturing has contracted, rather than expanded.

Hong Kong-based researcher Shen Minggao expects Chinese regulators in introduce measures to prevent further slowdowns, but not all the measures will be effective.

Both nations are downstream from the Xayaburi dam, where work is continuing despite their protests and promises by the Vientiane government that work would be suspended until November.
